Over 25 million people in the United States suffer from varicose veins. The most likely cause of varicose veins is venous insufficiency or reflux. Varicose veins are often mistakenly thought to be only a cosmetic condition when, in fact, they are usually a symptom of venous insufficiency. This condition progressively damages the valves of the large veins and disfigures the leg(s) in addition to causing symptoms which can become lifestyle limiting. Even without symptoms, cosmetic treatment is also an option and can be aimed at treating unattractive leg veins and varicosities.
